Last time I saw the full extended version, it was still David Lynch.
This is a movie for those who enjoy movies: big sets, great costumes, and the Shield effect is just as I imagined it from the book, especially during the "Mood is for cattle" scene with Patrick Stewart and Kyle at the beginning.
The look of the Atreides, and the Fremen and Arrakis is perfect. But the entire Harkonnen family was miscast, misdirected, and malformed. They were in fact a noble house, not members of "The Police.
The entire Harkonnen side of the tale practically ruins the film with the unbelievability.
And there is an awful lot of people "thinking" in this, which of course the way the book is, with unspoken thoughts. But it was too much.
Missing the Party at the Atreides House, Duncan Idaho's whole story is missing, and the dialogue from the book that makes the book great is simply not there.
And casting Sting as Feyd-Ruatha was kind of a mistake. And all he could say was "I'm gonna kill you. So, no. In the book, Feyd is almost as devious as Vlad Harkonnen.
The dialogue between Paul and Chani is clipped and stunted, all of the clever exchange between them is missing, all we get to see is Kyle pawing Sean Young.
It was as if they gave up halfway through production: after filming highly detailed scenes at the beginning of the film, the last half of the film was rushed through.
But still, after reading Dune dozens of times, the main story is all there.
David Lynch needs to revisit this film and give it a directors cut that only is available in certain Fanedits.
I saw this in the theatre when it was released, it was kind of big deal back in 1984. Despite the missing elements, it's still a worthwhile watch, and I have rated is as such.
