Read the reviews by date and one can tell which generation knows war and which does not. The effects shown on the characters is what we see on returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Regardless war is still the same and has lasting effects on the participants just as this movie shows. The acting is good because they are all professionals in the true sense of the word. The script is good because all of it is true to some degree for veterans of the Vietnam debacle. the scenes are authentic. Racist against Vietnamese-it is what it was. The film should be viewed today as a good history lesson for all. The only thing that has changed is that the steel mill has probably closed.

Fantastic analysis of the three main characters and how their main traits are already established during the first part of the movie. Awesome breakdown of the Russian roulette scene! Must have seen this movie dozens of times all the way through - seen it in the theater when it was released. I fully agree with you: it does have pacing issues: Warning: mild spoilers ahead! First part is very drawn out and almost meandering and a lot of what seems to be a setup (as you pointed out) goes nowhere - once in Vietnam and back and forth it suddenly seems rushed in places and there are some very sudden transitions (as if footage is missing. And yes I fully agree with you: in the first scene when they discover Michael, he is completely shell shocked (Thousand-Yard-Stare and all. just to be by far the soundest and strongest character in the movie again in the next scene which comes out of nowhere: we see an establishing shot of the small POW camp (awesome detailed set piece BTW) Still: what a movie! Another scene (among many) that truly touched me was when Michael decides not only to take a completely devastated and very weak Steven (great performance by John Savage) with them - against his initial escape plan - but he even jumps after him and carries him (won't spoil it further with details. It shows that Michael always had a heart of pure gold in him (which is shown in many more ways throughout the movie. Despite these issues: love this movie. Hands down this movie has the most gripping and effective ending of any movie ever made. imho. when I saw it in the theatre everybody stood up and cheered. What an experience. The deer hunter best scene. The deer hunter bar scene. This film was one boring experience. For the first hour or so, the film shows ordinary working class men and the nature of their friendships. They go deer hunting and drink at bars, playing pool. At this point, I'm already saying this movie quite boring, because I thought it will have connection to the second half of the movie, it is sure to have a great meaning and purpose. The film is brought abruptly to Vietnam, and moments into it, Deniro and company get captured, and are forced to play Russian roulette. For a movie that was superfluous, it takes a drastic turn to a "less is more" approach for the rest of the movie. We never get to see why Walken's character spirals into lala land, along with many other things. As far as the famous roulette scene goes, it does not even live remotely up to the hype. War is war; if the consequence of not "playing" meant a slow awful death, a revolver to the head really doesn't sound so bad.
