This movie is excellent, regarding every aspect! You can't stop watching it 'till its last second! The acting is great, all actors are amazing, the story is kind of genius, very well-conducted, specially for a long movie as this one! And of course, it was written by Stephen King, one of my favorite authors. In fact, I think this movie gets the #1 place in all book adaptations from him! Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins matched perfectly, two amazing artists. Every detail of this movie grabs your attention without you even notice! The first time I saw this movie (maybe 2 years ago) I started watching knowing that it was elected as the #1 movie of all time, here in IMDb, but even though I was not expecting too much, I'm now a huge fan of it! I totally recommend, worthy watching.

IF THIS WAS HAPPINESS A Biography of Rita Hayworth. By Barbara Leaming. Illustrated. 404 pp. New York: Viking. $19. 95. The most famous image of Rita Hayworth, erotic icon of the 1940's, is a pinup photograph in which she is kneeling on a rumpled bed, wearing a dark satin-and-lace nightgown; her head is turned over her shoulder and she is facing the camera directly. The pinup, published in Life magazine in 1941, is a fascinating study in contradictions. Seeming to offer her body, Hayworth also appears to be keeping her real self in mysterious reserve. As an actress, Hayworth is best remembered as Gilda in the film of the same name, peeling off long black gloves in a self-absorbed striptease. But the most haunting image in Barbara Leaming's biography of the movie star, ''If This Was Happiness, '' is one of a fat, silent 12-year-old girl sitting on the front porch of her house and staring straight ahead, too terrified to play with other children. Margarita Carmen Cansino grew up with a sickening, isolating secret: her father was sexually abusing her. Her mother - probably the only other person who knew about it - slept in a bed with the child in a vain attempt at protection. According to Ms. Leaming, her father's abusive treatment was the key to her emotional development and led to a lifetime of disastrous relationships. In 1927, Eduardo Cansino, a Spanish-born flamenco dancer whose work in vaudeville was admired by Fred Astaire, moved his young family from Brooklyn to California. A failure in films because of his poor English, Cansino began taking his daughter, Margarita - or Carmen, as he called her - out of school to dance as his partner on casino stages in Tijuana. Telling people she was his wife, he dyed the child's hair black, put scarlet lipstick on her mouth and dressed her in garish, sexy clothes. The ''roly-poly'' 12-year-old obediently flashed her eyes and tantalized. The sexual abuse continued in private. Cansino further exploited her by introducing her to movie producers such as Joe Schenck, who gave her a screen test that led to work as an ethnic extra in films being shot in Mexico. Then, in a 1935 Fox film called ''Dante's Inferno'' starring Spencer Tracy, the morbidly shy girl did a sensuous dance sequence. Press releases abbreviated her name to Rita Cansino and extolled the ''beautiful sixteen-year-old Spanish-Irish dancer who has circled the globe a dozen times. '' In 1937, a 41-year-old lounge lizard and sometime car dealer named Eddie Judson married 18-year-old Margarita. Her mother, who had been unable to protect the girl from her father, objected to her marriage to a man her father's age and indeed, on occasion, slapped Judson during quarrels. Like her father, Judson saw the girl as, in her own words, ''an investment. '' He even demanded that Cansino turn previously earned money over to him. Judson did get her a seven-year starlet contract at Columbia Pictures, where she did a fiery flamenco in ''Criminals of the Air'' and played on an all-female softball team in ''Girls Can Play. '' Judson promoted his wife's film career by dying her hair auburn and raising her hairline with electrolysis. He also rented gowns for her, took her to nightclubs, paid press photographers to take her picture, fabricated awards for her and answered all remarks addressed to her. Hayworth silently welcomed his ''protection, '' probably believing she was unable to take care of herself. Her husband repeatedly threatened her with physical abuse and disfigurement. He also offered her body to any man he thought would advance her career. Leaming, Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures - who had suggested she take her mother's maiden name, Hayworth, and who cast her as a pilot's wife in the classic Howard Hawks film ''Only Angels Have Wings'' - ''developed an obsession'' with the beautiful young woman. But in a rare, explicit show of strength, Hayworth refused her husband's order to sleep with ''the notoriously crude movie mogul. '' When he saw the famous Life pinup photograph, Orson Welles decided to marry her, and he did so in 1943. The frayed ''boy genius'' later directed the ''love goddess'' in the acclaimed film ''The Lady From Shanghai. '' However, the real Hayworth's emotional needs made Welles uncomfortable, and he cheated on her regularly with prostitutes and with other actresses, including Judy Garland. The dissolute Prince Aly Khan fell in love with Hayworth's image, too. The international playboy of the 1940's, he was famous for his wealth, his racehorses and his love life. He asked Elsa Maxwell, the hostess and public relations woman, to introduce him to the glamorous star. The prince was still married, and his internationally publicized courtship of, marriage to and subsequent divorce from Hayworth were among the factors that ultimately led his father, the Aga Khan - the spiritual leader of 15 million Muslims - to reject his son as his heir and ultimately designate his grandson to succeed him. After her divorce from Aly Khan in 1951, Hayworth's life went downhill fast. Custody battles over her daughters by Welles and the prince were bitter and public. Exploitative men were routine. She married the singer Dick Haymes, widely known in Hollywood as Mr. Evil, who took financial advantage of her. She began drinking heavily; irrational outbursts became common. By 1962, it was increasingly hard for her to remember dialogue. She seemed to blank out; once she even failed to recognize her former husband Orson Welles when he kissed her hello. In 1980, at the age of 62, she was finally diagnosed as a victim of advanced Alzheimer's disease, a less understood condition then than it is today. Her favorite daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, became her legal guardian and lovingly cared for Hayworth until her death in May 1987. Ms. Leaming, the author of a fine biography of Orson Welles, has created a convincing historical portrait of Rita Hayworth's world. The meticulous research makes the painful story of Hayworth's personal problems vivid, which may diminish some envy of her public successes. The book teaches a harder lesson: Rita Hayworth's tortured childhood, so well described in the early pages of ''If This Was Happiness, '' shaped her. Had she remained poor, she would probably have led at least as sad a life. Hollywood did not destroy her. Tinsel is, after all, no more and no less than tinsel.

Just saw this movie last week for the very first time. my favorite movie of all time now ive already watched it 3 other times. Me neither you guys run this place like a fuckin prison has me dying every time 😂. Imagine being such a deranged, psychotic monster you beat a man to death just for being scared during his first night in prison. And none of the other guards even has the balls to stop it. This movie is number #1 in IMDb and many of my friends says this movie is a crystal clear 10/10 and the best movie ever made.
I don't think I can agree on that note. Maby I had too high expectations or something but this one is really slow and have few sequences that gives you this feeling of a really REALLY great movie.
The actors of this movie I must say is very good and especially Morgan Freeman, whitch is one of my favorite actors of all time. He does a great job.
I give this movie 8/10 because it is a good movie, but nothing more than that.

I don't think they thought about about their defense too much, letting themselves get surrounded. they should have started the battle right at the gate so it was just a frontal attack. And yeah Andy Dufresne had the last laugh 😂and Big Samuel Norton Warden was dead after killing himself and big Byron Hadley ended like a prisonor and sobbed and soon with prick Elmo Blutch big thief.

This scene is deeper than just surface entertainment. Morgan Freemans character illustrates how most people go through life conforming to socially accepted and directed standards until reaching the crossroads where you finally realize its your own acceptance that really matters. When you cry in prison you are pretty much done for. This is how I feel during job interviews, at least until he gets approved. Wonder what Hadley s and Norton s wife said after they got Hadley arrested and Norton killed himself to avoid arrest after being testified from killing money laundering blackmailing lying to hold there an innocent prisinor. Moral of the story: be honest and say what you believe.

As a kid I hated these movies. I didnt understand them and they were so long I would fall asleep. After many years of believing they were terrible movies and having no desire to read the books I finally gave in and read them. Just finished today and loved them. Gave the movies another chance after probably 15 years and loved them too. They are different from the books in many ways, but very good. Glad I finally took a second look with an older eye.
