The quality is quite good because it is not re-encoded. Hes so right. The fact this movie gave me a heart attack makes this movie one of a kind. Its a genuine war movie because I often find myself after watching war movies, me wanting to fight a war but this movie made me never want to experience the horrors of war. Christian Bale just exaggerating his accent is hilarious. The guy that Schofield knocked out before this clip is named Baumer. When the clip begins, Schofield knocks down a drunk soldier. A few seconds later, the soldier calls to Baumer. I found on IMDB that one of the other German soldiers in this scene is named Muller (Probably the drunk guy. The main character in All Quiet on the Western Front is a German soldier named Baumer and one of his squad-mates is named Muller. I think it's a neat reference to past literature. I think two of my favorite scenes in this whole movie was the part where Schofield is running through the ruins of the abandoned city and you see one of the buildings on fire, and that's essentially the only light you have to see the characters outside, well, the only constant light. And the opening with the two characters running and ducking their way through no-mans-land underneath barbed wires, crouching in the ditches. Every time you see a body poking out of the dirt in that whole made me shiver.

Really happy that studios are making these 'gesamtkunstwerk' films and not just Marvel / Star Wars / etc.

While the trenches and everything before this scene seemed on a grand scale, it being just Blake and Schofield made also for a bit of intimacy. Im a student of history but not all history films are masterpieces in my eyes, so while I thought 1917 was indeed great, I did not consider it a masterpiece. Then came this scene with the star shells and this part of the score, and the movie felt truly epic to me in scope. The film transcended greatness and became a masterpiece for me. The climax was riveting and one of the most amazing things Ive ever seen in a film, but it was THIS night scene that had me say “ok, this is no longer a question of, ‘where does this film rank among 2019 movies? but of ‘where does this rank all-time? which wonderfully set the stage for that mind-blowing finale.

The perfect movie does exist. Hope it wins Oscar.
