(CNN) Seemingly a difficult concept in the best of times, "Snowpiercer" becomes more problematic in the midst of a pandemic, focusing as it does on humanity's warring remnants in a post-apocalyptic world. Even adopting a charitable view of that bleak outlook, the show suffers from soapy silliness, stilted situations and a lack of narrative momentum, preventing this train from ever getting out of the station. TNT moved up the heavily promoted premiere a few weeks, and the network is surely enthusiastic about having a show with ties to Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning director of "Parasite, " who made his English-language debut on the 2013 movie. Still, the premise about "a great ark train" -- 1, 001 cars long -- ferrying survivors around an ice-covered Earth chokes on dense plotting and a mostly nondescript collection of characters. In the late 1970s, NBC launched a notoriously expensive dud titled "Supertrain, " so students of TV history likely saw this as a derailment waiting to happen. Based on a French graphic novel, the series is all about class inequality, with the train providing a heavy-handed way of exploring the social pecking order. Seven years into this sobering reality, the poor live in cramped, horrible conditions in the train's tail, with ascending levels of privilege and luxury as you travel up the cars to first class. As if building that rolling world weren't enough, "Snowpiercer" sets its plot in motion with the oldest of devices -- namely, a murder mystery. Specifically, someone has been gruesomely killed in one of the front cars, prompting the train's officious bureaucrat, Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), to recruit Andre Layton ("Hamilton's" Daveed Diggs), a one-time detective living in the tail, to come forward to solve the case. If that sounds kind of ridiculous, wait, there's more. Layton reasons that gaining access to the front will provide crucial information that will help the tail dwellers mount a rebellion. The investigation enables him to glimpse the first-class zone, including gladiator-style fights for the right to earn an upgrade, as well as secrets about the management of a conveyance that can "never stop. " "Snowpiercer" certainly has plenty of social commentary woven into its concept. In addition to a nightmare vision of climate change, the class tensions are exacerbated by the fact everyone is trapped in close quarters -- a reasonably good if inadvertent metaphor, as it turns out, for the world's current predicament. Still, it's a big idea poorly done, and too heavy-handed in its approach to resonate much on that level. What remains is a whole lot of violence (which includes using the frigid weather outside as a grisly form of punishment), a little sex, and uninspired relationships involving the thinly drawn characters in its sprawling cast. TNT has already renewed the series for a second season, so don't expect closure when this 10-episode run ends. Yet while the train's journey across that frozen wasteland might not be able to stop, viewers who start down this disappointing track don't face any such restrictions. "Snowpiercer" premieres May 17 at 9 p. m. on TNT, which, like CNN, is a unit of WarnerMedia.
Snowpiercer ending. Snowpiercer reddit. Not the disaster its development indicated or a serialized distillation of the 2013 film, "Snowpiercer" is merely the next train-car in TNT's sci-fi fleet. As ridiculous as this may sound, try not to bring bring any baggage onboard “ Snowpiercer. ” TNT ’s long-in-the-works science-fiction series about a post-apocalyptic train ride carrying the last remnants of humanity (and all their pretty stuff! ) bills itself as an adaptation of Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette’s graphic novels and Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 film. But even though those stories send their titular trains down very different tracks, you don’t have to be familiar with either for expectations to burden the latest ride. “Snowpiercer’s” journey to television was a highly publicized debacle, including more than three years in development, two directors shooting and reshooting the pilot, a controversial showrunner swap, and a ping-pong between WarnerMedia networks. “Snowpiercer” was originally your typical TNT series order. Then, it was announced as the first drama to debut on a revamped TBS, and finally it rerouted back to what, after all that, felt like the basic-cable dumping grounds — especially since the highly touted, originals-lite HBO Max was sitting right there. So, whether you’re a proud member of the BongHive or you simply pay attention to entertainment news, the “Snowpiercer” series either has to live up to Oscar-caliber filmmaking or down to an all-too-fitting train-wreck. And yet… the first 10 episodes are neither. Season 1 is as about as far removed from Bong’s cinematic vision as you can get, without reaching the “so bad it’s good” level of TV that inspires mouth-agape hate-watching. The show is fine. It’s just fine. In an all-too-obvious twist, it’s exactly the kind of science-fiction drama that TNT has been making for roughly a decade — bound to satisfy former fans of “Falling Skies” or “The Last Ship, ” even if it doesn’t quite fit the network’s more recent prestige model built with “Claws, ” “The Alienist, ” and “Animal Kingdom. ” It certainly doesn’t fit the prestige now synonymous with Director Bong. For those going into “Snowpiercer” with even the faintest memory of the savage Neo-Marxist action flick (now streaming on Netflix), there will be a lot of early hurdles to leap. First off, the TNT series is a reboot, so even though it’s set eight years before the events of the film, don’t expect it to end by introducing Chris Evans. This version picks up nearly seven years after the world froze over and Earth’s last 3, 000 survivors climbed aboard Snowpiercer — a perpetually moving train that circles the globe, chewing up snow and ice to make water, grow food, and keep its passengers alive. Built by an eccentric millionaire called Mr. Wilford and made up of 1, 001 cars, the train is neatly divided into class systems that mirror most modern capitalist societies: The richest ticket buyers live in luxury near the almighty engine, and each subsequent group sees their quality of life limited to what they can afford, from the working middle class back to the penniless stowaways stuck in a windowless caboose. Much like reality, first-class passengers are insufferable one-percenters, who take their sumptuous morning breakfast in the Dining Car, before spending their evenings watching live music or betting on prize fights in the Night Car. They don’t have to work, and they each have their own fancy, schmancy room and fancy, schmancy clothes. Lower-class ticket holders have a little less privacy and considerably more responsibilities, whether it’s tending to 11 train cars of vegetable gardens or swimming in the Ocean Car’s floor-to-ceiling fish tanks to forage for seafood. Third-class gets the worst gigs (janitors, maintenance, etc. ), but there’s a subset beneath them who would (and do) kill for a sanitation uniform. Daveed Diggs in “Snowpiercer” © Justina Mintz / TNT Referred to as “the tail” of the train, its occupants are given an appalling moniker — “tailies” — spat at them as an insult by everyone else on the train and reclaimed as a sickeningly cute rallying cry by the tailies [swallows vomit] themselves. Stuck in a windowless compartment, eating scraps, and kept in the (literal) dark as to the luxury provided up-train, these ticketless riders fought their way onto the train by any means necessary. The series opens with a scene only shared in the movie via monologue, as the desperate men, women, and children who couldn’t afford a ticket to Mr. Wilford’s Ark do what it takes to survive, but Bong saved that speech because the horrific imagery it evoked set the stage for a bloody ending — here, it plays out live because it sets up a bloody show, sure, but not one that’s too shocking to witness. Aside from the unfortunate nickname, most of the above should sound somewhat familiar to film fans, but that feeling quickly disappears when the “Snowpiercer” series treats its audience like first-class passengers watching lower-class characters. Gone is the claustrophobic camerawork that wedged viewers in with the rebellious tail members. Walls that should push people together (and prohibit camera placement) are moved out of the way, and groups create privacy that shouldn’t be possible without actual compartments. The pilot also bounces around the train at will, introducing you to a sizable ensemble rather than staying in the back of the train until our protagonist, Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs), fights his way forward. Gleaming white corridors in first class offer ample space to roam, but the dungeons in the tail feel just as roomy. Such aesthetic choices may sacrifice the film’s squeamish intensity and, yes, they’re framed from the wrong perspective, but they do make sense for this kind of series. Asking viewers to spend 20 hours in the cramped train car Bong built is a preposterous request for a show gunning for mainstream ratings, and it’s the first hint that this “Snowpiercer” isn’t trying to imitate its cinematic predecessor. As episodes further explore the train, giant stages, generous lighting, and plenty of wide shots give the impression of more room than there could possibly be, while illustrating admirable production design, vivid costuming, and skillful world-building of its own. This isn’t Bong’s “Snowpiercer, ” it’s TNT’s. “Snowpiercer” © Justina Mintz / TNT Still, the series’ dead ear for goofy language nearly sends it off the rails with two simple words: “train detective. ” Though Season 1 does revolve around the same tail section rebellion as the film, it takes a half-season detour when Layton, a former homicide detective, gets escorted up-train to solve a grisly execution. For about four episodes, “Snowpiercer” veers way too close to becoming a TNT police procedural, a la “Murder on the Polar Express” (credit to IndieWire’s Libby Hill for that turn of phrase), and the characters’ repeated insistence on calling Layton the “Train Detective” — as though that’s a normal, everyday title and not the placeholder used in scripts until the writers could think of something better, only they never did — would be reason enough to quit watching. (Why don’t they just call him, “Detective”? It’s not like when he was a homicide detective he asked to be called, “Bathroom Detective” or “Sports Arena Detective — College Division. ”) These are the kind of silly complaints that eventually drift away for fans of science-fiction shows; there were plenty to avoid in “Falling Skies” and even more to lob at “The Last Ship, ” which is why if you watched enough of those shows to make a list, “Snowpiercer” will eventually win you over, too. As a season of escapist adventure, you could do far worse: Jennifer Connelly remains an expressive talent who, when she cracks her pristine porcelain features, can break your heart with a single teardrop. No one comes close to Tilda Swinton’s slimy, reptilian transformation — and Diggs often struggles to find a through-line from nuanced personal motivations to big, rah-rah speeches — but supporting players like Alison Wright of “The Americans” more than make up for any missing emotional heft. Most vital: The structure of the season keeps things moving, offering a clear arc and just enough intrigue to keep chugging into Season 2. For those who stumble across “Snowpiercer” while flipping channels, or learn of its existence from a few online advertisements, it might offer enough silly fun to stick with ’til the end. I have delayed seeing this film for a few weeks now, and after watching it, I do feel like I delayed perhaps the most gratifying experience I have ever had watching a movie. This two hour long epic is the type of film which makes me glad I know how to communicate through writing, because I feel a bit speechless. So, with an intro like that, let's talk about the film.
Characters & Story
In 2014, world leaders have seemingly found a way to end global warming using what is called "CW7." A chemical released into the atmosphere which is supposed to undo the majority of the damage human evolution has done over eons. However, what ends up happening is an ice age. One in which a train full of people represent the last remains of humanity.
Thus leading us to meet the main character Curtis (Chris Evans) who is the leader of those who live in the back of the train. Now, the way the train is setup is: first class, where all the rich live who seemingly don't work what so ever; economy class, of which there are those who work for the first class; and then there are the freeloaders, who were lucky enough to get on the train. This system has been in place for 17, going on 18, years. People have been born and died on that train, and naturally there have been attempts at revolution. None of which had Curtis at the helm though.
Leading us on an adventure in which Curtis, alongside the proposed leader Gilliam (John Hurt) Edgar (Jamie Bell) who seems to be Curtis' right hand man; Tanya (Octavia Spencer) a woman seeking to get back her son; Namgoong Minsu (Song Kang-ho. Yona (Go Ah-sung) who work together to open the gates and doors separating the tail end civilians from the front; all face off against Mr. Wilford (Ed Harris) and Mason (Tilda Swinton) in an attempt to establish a new order by almost any means necessary.
Praise
It is highly rare for me to sit to the end of a movie's credits, and that is because once the movie seemingly has ended, I feel I have gotten all I could want out of it. However, with this film I was hoping for one more scene, one more gift bestowed before the screen went black. That is how consuming this film is. Within those two hours you find yourself quickly attaching yourself to Curtis' revolution and with each sacrifice made, you want to tighten your fist and join the fight.
All this though is thanks to both the acting and story. To begin, Chris Evans, who has come so far since Not Another Teen Movie, fits the tortured hero role so well he seems like he was written by a Greek playwright. His role as the leader of the downtrodden shows those who may never seen Captain America, which his performance is inspiring me to watch, why he will indubitably have lead roles for decades to come. For, just as much as he can play some silly comic role, he can play this deeply troubled soul, whose judgment is questionable, and yet you still see him as a hero no matter what, or who, he sacrifices. Of course the rest of the cast deserves praise as well for they each represent a different type of hope. Curtis represents the hope of change; Tanya represents the hope of a mother; and Namgoong Minsu represents the hope of the future.
Of which is perhaps the story's main focus. Every few years there is a rebellion, and all have failed. Yet we get to see this beautifully written rebellion which strangely has the ability to quickly get you wrapped up in characters' lives; make you want to root for them every time a battle is impending; and damn if you aren't torn when some of them seemingly won't make it to see their dreams come forth into reality. But even then, as each glimmer representing hope dies, one shines a bit brighter and you hope it all will be worth it in the end.
Criticism
Honestly, the sole issue I had in the film was Swinton's character Mason, who seemed almost like a comic relief. The way she spoke, the way the character was acted, I would have wanted her dead even if she wasn't a villain. Also, and maybe I just missed it on occasion, the film employs a universal translator so Curtis and Namgoong Minsu can talk to one another, but sometimes it seems nowhere to be found when they speak. Overall though, there aren't any huge issues which could ruin the experience.
Overall: Worth Seeing
This is the type of film you wished was a mini-series. First because it is an adaptation of the graphic novel Le Transperceneige, of which I can only hope there are more details within. Then, secondly, it is because you get so attached to these characters, their hope, and the overall story, that you really don't want things to end. And yet, when you can see the end is near, the film keeps up this interesting pace by switching out the action scenes with the type of reveals which could make your jaw drop, or at the very least surprise you a little bit. And overall, I think this is worth watching because out of all these post- apocalyptic movies that have been coming out over the last few years, this is the first one, I know of, which isn't some young adult book adaptation which seems more focused on the lead's love life over their struggle against their oppressors. Something strangely refreshing, at least to me.
