Ever wondered what would happen if a group of children decided to "orphan" themselves from their miserable rotten parents? Well, the film adaptation of the Lois Lowry novel The Willoughbys answered that question for us. Produced by the visual effects studio Bron, the film was released straight to Netflix as opposed to the theaters, potentially to avoid the insipid competition going on in movie theaters (before the pandemic hit at least. Having watched it, it almost feels like a tribute to the dry cynical humor of Roald Dahl books and the bittersweet comical fun of Aardman movies.
The film focuses on Tim, Jane, and the Barnanbies Willoughbys, who decide to get rid of their neglectful old-fashioned parents while venturing out into the modern world with their new nanny. What makes the Willoughby children very endearing as characters is the contrast between their terrible parents who frankly never cared for them, despite many of their supposed "great" family legacy. The old-mannered mansion of the Willoughbys showcases photos of mustached ancestors from eons ago, but those pasts are no more, so the children choose to find their own paths, hence where the nanny comes in. The film manages to communicate the message that the best families chose to be a part of your life without hammering it down the audience's throats, and the nanny herself is an eccentric albeit wonderfully gifted role model that the children never had. But in addition to heart comes the humor, from briskly timed visual jokes, to the hysterical carelessness of the Willoughby parents, and some notable banter between the children worthy of writing home about.
In addition to a bizarre yet thrilling narrative, the film has a colorful visual style. In addition to contrasted gloomy and rainbow-filtered color palettes, a lot of the objects and characters practically shine on the screen. The character designs in particular feel like Quentin Blake illustrations brought to life through the magic of digitally enhanced computer animation. Although many computer animated films in recent years have gone for a stylized cartoony aesthetic, this film manages to make the frame rate intentionally choppy and simplified, thus giving the film an almost stop-motion feel not too different from the Lego movies. As for the voice-acting, as rambunctiously entertaining as Martin Short and Jane Krakowski are as the WIlloughby parents, it seems kind of weird to have adult-actors Will Forte and Sean Cullen voice the kids, although singer Alessia Cara does fit the role of the passionate fun-loving Jane well. Otherwise, the cast did the best they could with the material they were given, and with all the enthusiasm a film like this has, they nailed it pretty well.
With a cast of charmingly mischievous characters, playful animation and a good balance of heart and humor, the Willoughbys may just be one of the better family films on Netflix in recent years. In an age where it seems like children's media has almost lost the charm of the simpler albeit grander adventures of precocious youngsters, it's great to know that filmmakers are still keeping those narratives alive with fresh concepts of their own. Whether you have a kid or not, I'm sure this film will speak a lot to them within the coming years for the benefit of a great family.

A decent storyline with nice animation. Written by the same author who also wrote " The Giver. The Willoughbys " is drastically different. Filled with quirky and slightly weird children characters and interesting cat-rration throughout. I do like the message that the movie brings across - just because someone is blood - doesn't mean they are family. It has to be earned.
