I watched this at home on DVD from my public library. I somehow missed this 22 years ago when it came out, I was inspired to look it up after seeing the most recent M.I. movie last week in 3D IMAX version.
This is a good movie, with more of the feel of the missions that the old TV series featured. It uses what might be considered a MacGuffin, the theft of a secret list of undercover agents and their real names. But we never learn the fate of the list and whether or not it is really that critical.
Instead the focus of the story is a mission gone wrong, and all the team except Ethan Hunt are killed. It is clear there is an inside "mole" and the rest of the movie is identifying that mole and neutralizing him or her.
The was Tom Cruise's first M.I. movie in the lead role of Ethan Hunt. In a connection to the old TV series, Jon Voight is in the role of Jim Phelps.

Mission: impossible - rogue nation movie. Here's a clear, concise list of all the Mission: Impossible films and links to where you can watch them online. Who doesn't love a good summertime popcorn flick? Back in 1996, Tom Cruise starred in and co-produced the original Mission: Impossible (well, besides the TV series), a visually impressive masterclass in action sequences and fight choreography that redefined a genre and ushered in a new era of Hollywood actioners. This first success soon blossomed into a commercially and critically successful franchise with six films to its name and two more on the way. With the advent of the Internet, you can binge the entire franchise wherever you are; at home, on vacation, etc., but it can be difficult to find out which websites you can stream it from. Here's a clear, concise list of all the Mission: Impossible films and links to where you can watch them online. 6 Mission: Impossible (1996) The first in a series of films based on the eponymous spy thriller television series, 1996's Mission: Impossible stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, an IMF (Impossible Missions Force) agent. After he's suspected of being the mole that led to the deaths (in a botched operation) of every member of his team besides himself and the leader, Jim Phelps. He teams up with Jim's wife, Claire, and two skilled former IMF operatives to out the true traitor. Backed up by its casting decisions, including longtime Hollywood star Jon Voight, the film became a huge commercial success, grossing over $450 million on an $80 million budget. Despite receiving somewhat of a mixed reception upon release, in recent years it's become a cult classic of sorts; even if it sometimes falls prey to classic tropes and plot holes, the film that started it all is just as fun and action-packed today as it was in decades prior. Available on: Amazon, DirecTV, Google Play, iTunes, Microsoft Store, SlingTV, Vudu, YouTube 5 Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) 2000's Mission: Impossible 2 continues the adventures of Ethan Hunt, as the IMF calls upon him once again. A rogue agent has stolen the antidote to a potentially catastrophic virus, and the crooked pharmaceutical company in possession of the virus is cooperating with him to cause a global epidemic. Alongside former professional criminal Nyah Nordoff-Hall, Hunt is forced to stop the criminals before they can unleash their instrument of warfare worldwide. Boasting some improved effects and a fresh new cast, this second installment was just as commercially successful as its predecessor, making nearly $550 million on a budget of $125 million. While the lack of clear character development and a coherent plot led some critics to declare the film a failure, the visual thrill-rides of action sequences the franchise is known for are as exciting as ever. 4 Mission: Impossible III (2006) Picking up the series six years from when Mission: Impossible 2 left off, 2006's Mission: Impossible III follows Hunt, now a retiree, as he seems content to live a normal life with his fiancée Julia Meade rather than participate in another mission - although he does secretly train new IMF recruits on the side. However, he's finally convinced to step back into the action when he's drawn into a plot involving terrorist organizations, a mysterious McGuffin, and a sinister arms dealer. While it wasn't as commercially successful as the franchise's previous two installments, drawing just about $400 million on a $150 million budget, critically the film was viewed as an improvement on its predecessors, with review outlets praising the plot as easier to follow and less convoluted than what was presented previously and lauding the film's visual effects as top-notch. 3 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) After a five-year hiatus, the Mission: Impossible franchise made its return in 2011 with Ghost Protocol, continuing the tradition established by the previous films of using a different director every time (the first film was directed by Brian De Palma, the second by John Woo, and the third by J. J. Abrams; this entry was headed by Brad Bird of Incredibles fame). The film follows Hunt on yet another adventure, as he's tasked with tracking down warmongering nuclear strategist "Cobalt", culminating in an all-out, one-on-one fight to the death in the final act. The film was a huge success, and a rather surprising one at that - at the box office, it surpassed expectations by making nearly $700 million on a comparatively meager $145 million budget; it also found success with critics, many of whom praised the franchise's newfound focus on genuinely clever writing to back up its impressive visual effects, with director Brad Bird's somewhat unconventional methods being especially noticed. 2 Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) The next installment, 2015's Rogue Nation, puts Hunt in a position he's never been in before - a fugitive on the run from the law, as the CIA has been after him ever since they successfully put an end to the IMF for what they perceived as criminal misconduct. Meanwhile, a terrorist group has also set their sights on him, meaning he has to dodge these dual threats while relentlessly working to save the world from the vices of evil - but at this point, that's all in a day's work for the franchise's almost invincible protagonist. Rogue Nation was met with around the same level of success as its predecessor; it made $680 million on a $150 million budget and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the film for being a fairly above-average summer popcorn flick. Cruise's performance, in general, was also appreciated, as the actor proved once again that he has an unrivaled ability to play the part of an action hero. 1 Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) If there's anything to take away from the Mission: Impossible franchise, it's that danger is never far away; just two years after the previous installment, 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout once again forces Hunt into a dangerously - and quite possibly deadly - predicament. Facing new foes alongside old friends, the intrepid super-spy is tasked with retrieving plutonium cores from operatives of a recently-formed terrorist group that grew out of the remnants of the organization seen in the previous film. Boosted by its star-studded cast and amazing reviews, Fallout made nearly $800 million on a budget of $178 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2018 and one of the most commercially successful films of Cruise's entire career. Many critics claimed this sixth entry to be the best film of the entire franchise, highlighting how impressive it was that the series could still find new ways to be exciting even after all the years that had passed since the first film's release; also, several praised the film individually for its departure from the formulaic fluff that rendered the franchise's earliest installments mediocre by comparison. CONTAINS ONE SPOILER
For those who have ever watched the old good series, get lost- this movie has absolutely anything to do with them. If you liked Jim, the IMF boss from the old series, also get lost- he's the bad guy now. But if you don't really care about matching the old series with this movie (like myself) then give this baby a try- you won't regret it.
It is a very good movie as a thriller ( WHO THE HECK IS THE BAD GUY AROUND HERE. HOW THE HECK WILL HE INFILTRATE INSIDE THE CIA BUILDING. etc) and very entertaining. I also liked that chewing gum that is in reality a bomb.
I only found three problems in this movie:
1- No movement detector in a top-security CIA computer room. Give me a break!
2- An helicopter. in a tunnel. Too impossible to be true. You may find it ridiculous.
3- The plot is a little bad.
So I give this movie a 8/10. I think I am going to watch the Mortal-Kombat-styled Mission Impossible 2, but I doubt it is going to be better than this one. Tom Cruise fighting Kung-Fu or something? I guess he will, who knows. John Woo can really become a pain in the a. can't he.

They should make a movie about Tom Cruise titled : Tom Cruise and the balls of Steel. Mission: impossible fallout. Mission impossible 7. Mission impossible 2. I am what you called a millennial and I respect classic movies. Tbh, I like to watch it.

Martin Landau was originally offered the role of Spock on Star Trek. He turned it down, and went to Mission Impossible instead. A few years later, Leonard Nimoy replaced Landau on MI. How's that for irony. But it's all good, Landau and Barbara Bain went on to star together in the (IMO underrated) British TV series, Space: 1999. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is easily one of my favorite movies of 2018 alongside Avengers Infinity War and Incredibles 2. When you have a self-destruct message that could have just as easily been sent on Snapchat.

Most badass actor in Hollywood. Just today, after watching this trailer at 4pm, I went to sm cinema & see it at 5:15 pm. Great movie! I enjoyed it. Mission impossible 6. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019 Verified Purchase I stopped watching after about 15 minutes or so, so I can't speak to the movie as a whole, but what I saw was bad. Just a lot of blatant exposition. Saying things that characters would never realistically say because the audience needs information and the writers can't come up with a subtle way to communicate it. And let's have a little 5 second scene where the team teases each other and laughs together, because that's supposed to make us care when they are killed, even though we just met these people, and there has been no actual character development, and no opportunity for the audience to connect. And then just bonehead stuff: we want to use military time, because we think that sounds like spy talk, but we're also worried that the audience won't understand military time, so we're gonna have the character say the same time, twice in a row, " 0-400 hours. 4am" -- it's little bs stuff like that that makes the dialogue unrealistic and the characters seem fake. Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2020 Verified Purchase 1996’s Mission Impossible created a franchise starring Tom Cruise as agent Ethan Hunt. The film was directed by Brian De Palma. Many of the elements would be used again and again. The one drawback was the plot was a little overcomplicated due to the fact that production started before one even existed, but it was still a great thrill ride. If you read the background to the film you’ll find out that writing the movie was a mess. Several different writers were brought in and out and there were constant re-writes. De Palma ended up creating the action sequences and building the story around them. That explains a lot. The story revolves around the CIA’s agent list being stolen and Hawk running around the world trying to get it back. To show how chaotic the story was the list turns out to be a fake and Hunt goes and steals the real one from CIA headquarters to sell to an arms dealer known as Max. Then someone on his team tries to steal the list. All the while there are people betraying Hunt as well. What really drove the movie however was the action and the special effects. Many of these would become mainstays of the series. In the first scene for instance, Hunt wears a plastic mask to impersonate someone which would be used in almost every movie afterward. Probably the most famous scene is when Hunt breaks into the CIA to steal the list and is suspended by a line from the ceiling into a sealed room. He almost gets dropped on the floor setting off the alarms. Overall this was an exciting movie. Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019 Verified Purchase This offering is said to have grossed over $750, 000, 000. So for future reference I watched the whole thing to see why. Honestly I still don't know why. It was too slick and impossible. I mean, for some reason there were no CCTV cameras in the sacred vault. I don't know if anyone who watched this film has ever lowered a man carefully, slowly while holding a 1/2 inch rope tether line~ I have. If help hadn't arrived I would have unable to hold on for more than a few seconds. As far as the helicopter in the tunnel, well that was stupidly ridiculous. The whole plot was so riddled with impossible situations, and everything that happened went so smoothly. This is one bad flick. Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2016 Verified Purchase Usually sequels never live up to the original; the Mission: Impossible series is the notable exception. MI-1 was dark, silly, and poorly conceived. Making Jim Phelps a villain was so contrary to the original series, it should have been a reboot (but they didn't think that way then). If you haven't watched any of them, don't start with this one; but if you do, keep going - they get much better! Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019 Verified Purchase If you like action films, you will love this. Even though I haven't seen the tv series. But Tom Cruise knows how to keep on the edge of your seat. I have seen all of them, except the recent one. Need to see that one. ACTION PACKED!!! Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2015 Verified Purchase Is there a place for time proven methods and principles in today's society? This is a message that is part of the subtext of Mission: Impossible. The film deals with a changing world and how people cannot always change with the world around them. Sometimes the decisions that have to be made lead people to new careers while some people are able to adapt to the changing world within their lives. Over time Mission: Impossible has held up to be a successful example of a film adaption of a television series. Though the production of this film was troubled in finding it's direction and focus. Once Brian De Palma was brought on as director, he was able to alleviate these issues. The production team was able to take a concept and vague character profiles from the television series from the 1960s and translate into an engaging espionage thriller. The story follows an American espionage agent (Tom Cruise) who is framed after his team is killed during a mission. He has to unravel the plot against him and prove his innocence without the support of his government. The film also features Jon Voight, Vanessa Redgrave, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno, Kirsten Scott Thomas and Emilio Estevez. The film's plot is in constant motion. It does not stagnate for long and the film does not stop telling the story to hold the viewer's hand to keep up with the plot twists. This film was the first time that Tom Cruise displayed his action star potential. It not only solidified him as an A-list actor but also someone who could be the forerunner for a franchise. He had to display a different range of acting, as at the time a movie such as this was unexplored territory for him; as well as learn to develop physical abilities for his roles which has continued to the present day.. While the direction of the franchise has been doubted throughout it's course this installment set it on it's path. I have never been so bored in my entire life as I was when I went to see this film. It was long. It was plotless. It was badly acted. Absolutely unspeakable. Fallout is truly phenomenal, it is not only the best mission impossible film, but the best a mission impossible film can be. I've never seen such a fantastic film in a theater, its story is perfect. It has so much detail to it and i was locked in the entire time, it was so complex that I must see it again to fully understand the detail in the script. The main problem with most of the mission impossible films is the characters. But in Fallout, it takes the characters, and makes them so likable that you want them succeed. An early film this year, Avengers: Infinity War, Has a great characters. But it has likable characters because of 18 movies of build up. Fallout has 5 movies, that didn't develop the characters that much, and this movie makes the characters so just likable and interesting. The visuals in this movie. OH MY GOD D*MN F*CKING GOD. They were AMAZING. There is so much to a film that is in a era, were these stunts could be done easily with green screen and CGI, that is entirely practical. Every action scene is so thrilling and well shot that I was in shock. This film was brilliant in the camera angles that my jaw dropped. The 3rd act is shot so well and it is incredibly thrilling. The visuals are phenomenal. This movie, and this is gonna sound dramatic, but this is the best action movie I've ever seen. Die Hard, Indiana Jones, The Matrix, The Incredibles, The Dark Knight, Inception, Mad Max: Fury Road, Fallout is better than them all, it is truly spectacular to see Fallout.

If he can do it without having heart attack I can do it to! Ones this quarantine is over. Tom cruise would make a great uncharted movie. Tom Cruise delivers a excellent performance. The direction is top notch and the film manages to hold up 20 years later and I think that's what makes this film better. My only criticism of this film is how ridiculous the Internet is protrayed and how hard it is to follow the plot.

I like how no one in the chopper ever bothered to shoot at him. Barbara Bain was a hottie and her hubby (Martin Landau) was one of my favorites growing up. I never watched Space 1999 when it was new so I had a treat when I binge watched all of them recently. Mission impossible fallout. 2:50 almost forgot MI:2 had Limp Bizkit in it.
