This movie is one that chronicles intimate relationships between children and maids. These children were raised by maids and developed a sense of right and wrong in a time where these loving replacement mothers were nothing more than servants. It's a story about a young woman raised by such a loving woman who goes against the grain to do what is right in an attempt to change the status quo. It's an act that is dangerous to all involved. There is some historical information as well as lots of laughs and some tears. This movie is deep, complex and has the ability to evoke emotion across the spectrum. We need more uplifting movies like this. I say a hearty THANK YOU to Kathryn Stockette for having the courage to write this book on which the movie was based. Well done.

That pretty much sums up 2011's heralded "The Help, which stars Emma Stone as an aspiring journalist who encourages black maids (Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer) to chronicle their experiences for an article as the Civil Rights Movement kicks into full gear in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi. Bryce Dallas Howard is on hand as the uppity biyatch and Jessica Chastain plays an amiable Marilyn Monroe-ish housewife.
I like films that involve rural blacks, like "Mississippi Burning" 1988) and "Waterproof" 2000) and "The Help" falls into this category. The movie provides a window into early 60's Southern culture and the plight of black women. Despite being snooty, Bryce looks great and Jessica looks even better, nice and curvy (she reportedly gained 15 lbs. for the role, which I wish she'd keep. Emma is effective as the protagonist, but she's too good-looking to for the role since it calls for an early 20s woman who's never been asked out on a date. Why sure! Nevertheless, this is a solid period drama with authentic Mississippian locations.
The movie runs 146 minutes and was shot in Clarksdale, Greenwood and Jackson, Mississippi.

There is a difference between fantasy and myth, and for me this film is an attempt to mythologise the not-so-distant past, but ends up being only a (good) fantasy, inviting viewers to feel good too easily. Fine performances, overly-fine sets. That being said, good idea to mythologise the past, surely! But not without impacting the present, in other words, it is too easy to feel good coming away from this. In moral terms, it is nearly a black-and-white (no pun intended) presentation of the era, distancing itself too easily from messier, greyer reality. Perhaps it is worth it to simply let us play at being the daughter and the white person of our dreams, but I think today is worth too much to accept such a rendering of our past.
