Snowpiercer is a thrilling and original dystopian SCI-FI experience that will unquestionably be one of the best films of the year. In fact, it's one of the best films I've seen in several years.
The film takes place in the near future where the world has completely frozen over, and all life is extinct, aside from a lucky few onboard a highly advanced transcontinental locomotive called Snowpiercer. The story begins in the tail-section of the train, in which live the oppressed lower class passengers. The tail-sectioners are viciously ruled over by front-section soldiers who work for the train's creator, Wilford.
One man named Curtis decides to lead an uprising to free the tail-sectioners from the iron- fist of the front section and make a near-suicidal run for the front of the train.
Snowpiercer is instantly compelling and brilliantly creates its grim, nearly hopeless universe. Even more remarkable is it achieves that with almost no exposition at all. The film drops you right into the middle of this world and these peoples' lives and requires you to keep up with it and piece together the particulars of this world as the story unfolds. To describe any details of the plot past the set-up would be criminal, but I'll just say Snowpiercer's plot is one of the twistiet, most shocking, intense and morally complex of any film ever.
The performances in the film are likewise stellar. Chris Evans gives a confident, nuanced, and ultimately heart-breaking performance as the noble but flawed hero of the piece. He's balances between tough and sensitive perfectly and creates one of the most fully-realized movie protagonists in recent memory. There's also excellent supporting work from John Hurt, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris. But who straight up walks away with the show is Tilda Swinton in what has to be the best performance of 2014. She is both hilarious and despicable and just a plain delight.
In addition to all those things, Snowpiercer has some incredibly intense and brutal action scenes, but unlike some "action movies" you feel the stakes. The action is just as intense emotionally as it is viscerally. The action is also perfectly choreographed and expertly photographed. The direction across-the-boards is superb from Korean director Joon-ho Bong, who makes the most of the film's seemingly limited setting and crafts a visually brilliant film without a huge budget.
Snowpiercer is simply a masterpiece of the genre and filmmaking in general.
It's a must see experience and the best film of the year so far.
(I very much doubt there will be a better one.
