Lily Collins is a good actress and gorgeous, so I wanted to like this, watched it because of her and just came away disappointed. The plot is preposterous, and so much so, that I just concentrated on how spectacular she looked in the various fashions and the mansion setting is equally fabulous. I didn't realize I was watching Simon Pegg till the movie was almost over. In 2020 it's hard to believe someone would think to write this script as some type of a thriller. There are twists and turns in the story and I guessed everyone well in advance of their reveal which gives you an idea of how poorly this is put together. Lily deserves better then this but she is the only reason I even give this 5 stars.
I quite enjoyed the premise and although absurd that is what movies are all about its not real life to the reviewer who beggars belief, so is the premise of many other movies and that does not make it a bad movie just a creative idea much like many Stephen King movies but this one could not maintain the level of tension and pacing and just petered out from the middle onwards to the rather disappointing ending.
That being said it wound its way quite well until the denouement which was a bit of a letdown and the end was a bit of a damp squib too, I was expecting something more jaw dropping int he vein of the writers of Saw or Hannibal but no runs out of steam like most films these days seem to.
Passable entertainment but fails to reach much above the 6th rung on the ten step ladder.
