One of the most famous directors of our time, Christopher Nolan made his first hit with „Memento" which was based on his brother Jonathan's short story. This was followed by the lesser-known „Insomnia" then Nolan introduced himself to a bigger audience with the first part of „The Dark Knight" trilogy „Batman Begins! The Batman reboot was followed by „Prestige" which he also made with the help of his brother. Then came the Nolan film which was considered to be the best so far: „Inception. After finishing „The Dark Knight" trilogy, Nolan came up with something original again. He and Jonathan grabbed a theoretical physicist (Kip Thorne) for the sake of scientific accuracy and worked over Jonathan's script which was originally written for Steven Spielberg. And this is how one of the most anticipated films of 2014, Interstellar was born.

According to the story the Earth is dying. The more and more dangerous sandstorms are regular and the only food left for humanity is corn. After a typical, „Nolanish" long exposition Cooper the farmer-engineer-pilot single dad leaves Earth with few scientists and two robots in order to find a new home for mankind. It is fascinating how Matthew McConaughey transformed from an average romantic-comedy star to one of the best actors of our era. Although he got an Oscar last year for „Dallas Buyers Club" I wouldn't have been surprised if he had defended his title in the same category this year. Anne Hatheway's portrayal of a scientist who is struggling between the interest of herself and the interests of science was also great. We will better keep an eye on Mackanzie Foy who gave us one of the best personation of the year. Jessica Cahstain was as brilliant as she was in „Zero Dark Thirty" if not better, and Michael Caine easily gave a performance with his usual elegance in his classic (but now a bit twisted) role in Nolan films, and Matt Damon showed us again that he has much more talent than being only in action films. Unfortunately the film doesn't give other characters enough screen time. For example we won't know much about Cooper's son (Casey Affleck) and to be honest I don't even remember the name of Wes Bentley's character. We won't have many information about Cooper's accident either.

Don't get me wrong, the script is perfect apart from the few minorities I mentioned. The dramatic scenes were quite emotional, the humorous moments always came in the right tempo (the source of these was mainly TARS who has become one of the best robot-characters in the history of film. Time always plays a huge role in Nolan films. It is not different now, the film even puts time into a new perspective.

There are few films that can show the emptiness of space like „Interstellar" does. The well-known directional resort when there's no sound in space suits it really well. In this case there is no music either. While we are at music, I have to mention that Hans Zimmer probably composed one of his best works ever which, knowing the previous works of Zimmer, is quite an achievement. I also have to mention the effects which were absolutely stunning whether we are talking about the planets or scenes that take place in outer space.

We haven't seen a real, thoughtful sci-fi for a long time, that is why it is a huge positiveness, that the film is really complex. It is about (among many things) the importance of family, the fight of a person, the power of nature, the so-called „supernatural power" and survival instincts. And about many different things that we will be thinking about for days after watching the film. This is why I recommend everyone to watch Interstellar, because this is Christopher Nolan's most mature, and one of the best films of the decade so far
