The Help made quite a splash when it topped the box office list and stayed there for a pretty long time, fending off horror movies, sci-fi blockbusters and romantic comedies. Enough time had passed, though, to be able to admit that it's really not all that great, and very far from the 'best film of the year slot.
The Help isn't a bad movie, but it treads very familiar ground, on one hand showing once again how awful racism is, while also white-washing history and giving it a very politically correct treatment. The story is pretty touching, in a manipulative sort of way, but it's been seen many times before.
The acting is what makes The Help worth watching after all - Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis are both truly terrific, and they manage to crawl completely into their characters' skins take the viewer back through time to the early 60's. Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain are excellent too. Emma Stone almost ruins it though, as she really failed to convince me her character was real or that she wasn't a girl from the 2000's playing in a period piece.
Overall, a watchable movie - acting, pretty cinematography and costumes, and good editing give it the 7 stars rating - but not a very memorable one.
