Simply an amazing kind of movie that will forever raise my standard for what movies should be.
LOTR seemed to take some of the best of Hollywood blockbuster (stunning visuals, fast pacing, seat-edge action) and mix it with some of the best for award-winning drama (heart-wrenching action, stunning cinematography, wonderful script.
LOTR is the first and ONLY fantasy film to ever have transcended the murky B-grade waters into a true masterpiece of film.
I will watch this movie dozens of times, for the rest of my life.

As far as I am concerned, the last thing on my mind is whether or not the American Academy recognises LOTR as a "great" film. Let them keep their mediocre 'Star Wars' Titanic' and 'Pearl Harbour. they are welcome to them.
For all Tolkien fans, this is our Precious, not theirs; a lasting testimony to the great man's ambivalence to Disney-like dumbing down in all of its manifestations. 10 out of 10 Mr. Jackson for bringing the greatest dream ever written to the big screen. This is the best fantasy movie ever, no doubt. Is it the best movie ever? I do not put such labels on single movies since they all strive to achieve different goals and show different things. Everyone complains about this being a lightweight compared to such great movies as The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption. Is it really? I think not. The Godfather wants to portray a mafia family and its history, The Shawshank Redemption an innocent man and how he cunningly tricks the evil prison warden. Both movies are made to look like they might actually have happened.

The Lord of the Rings has no such pretentions. It is a fantasy movie with goblins, ghosts and brilliant heroes that defeat evil time and again (and hopefulle get the chicks too. I wouldn't compare it to the two mentioned above at all since they are so different. I guess I'm trying to say that one should not label movies as "best movie ever" but as "best drama. best action" and so on.
And BTW, I really think LotR is a really great movie! Yes there are flaws, mostly visual, but it IS breathtakingly beatiful, it IS truly epic, and the actors actually ARE fantastic! I gave it 10/10, but that is because I thought it would never come close to my expectations after having read the book. Maybe the right thing to do would be giving it 8/10, but. nah! Peter Jackson rules.
