It's an easy read and a couple of evenings took care of it without any great aching of the brain. It's no Tolstoy (it's not even as demanding as a Stephen King) but certainly more entertaining. The trouble is, it's popular. Very popular.
And then came this; the popular, the very popular, film adaptation.
I rail against the hysteria that follows a new fad, particularly films and books. I have a real aversion to being told what I must like and how much I should like it. I resisted Harry Potter for a good few years until my nieces insisted I read it to them. And then? Actually I though thought the first book was bland and distinctly average and, had it not been for the gentle urging of a respected friend, I would have stopped at book one. The Help, apparently unable to speak for itself, is another work being touted by the world's media as a great, a must-see, an Oscar certainty… It's another cinematic bandwagon laden with unthinking passengers who are enjoying the mild hysteria they're experiencing and justifying by the ever-growing mountain of awards that is burying the film.
For those who walk around with their fingers in their ears, it serves up the story of a privileged white girl who, in a bid to launch her writing career, hits upon the idea of writing a book from the point of view of the slaves, sorry, the help, who keep her home, and that of all the homes of the rich white folk in the deep south of America, going. It's onto a winner from the outset and has no work to do because, let's face it, we all know that racism is evil and, for the most part, the white folk have learned that much of what they did was despicable.
I entered the cinema with an expectation, and perhaps even a determined hope, if I'm honest, that the film would fail for me and I'd leave unmoved and with thoughts overloaded with disdain to hurl into this post. I left with a slightly modified view and an emotional tickling i.e. not as severe as a bashing.
I strongly suspect The Help is 2012's Driving Miss Daisy, to wit, we'll shower it with accolades now but in a few years we'll realize we've been hoodwinked and, actually, it's not very good. Yes, it serves up a few good moments of lumpy throat emotion but it wasn't sufficient to make me blub. Yes, it has something to say but it lacks the impact of, say, a Cry Freedom in its day. This is a classic case of preaching to the converted and allowing us all to feel good about ourselves because we agree with the message. I'm guessing it won't reach many die-hard KKK members and therefore will have no impact on the persisting issues.
But there are plenty of high points, not least of all Jessica Chastain who is rapidly becoming one of my FAIDs (Five Allowed In Dreamtime – more on that in a later post) along with her unofficial sibling (is it only me who sees it. Kelly Reilly. Her turn as Celia Foote is huggably engaging but, alas, she plays little more than light relief to the weightier roles Aibileen, Skeeter and Hilly. Viola Davis is sincere in her portrayal of Aibileen, the matriarch of her community, and the focal point for those handing out gongs but for me this is an ensemble piece and I don't think any actor stands out as more deserving than another. Although it may earn gold, it doesn't have gold written across it and I'll hark back to my comment about Driving Miss Daisy.
Emma Stone is not the Skeeter I imagined as I read the book and she's coasting here, well below the quality and impact she previously promised in Easy A and even Zombieland. Alison Janney, yet again, enhances the group effort and Sissy Spacey has fun in a pantomime cameo.
Much of the story is abbreviated for pace but the biggest cause of irritation comes at the end credits in the form of Mary J. Blige's horribly jarring song, The Living Proof, that is saccharine pulp and both too modern and too twee for a film that, despite it's lightweight failings, is a film worth spending a tenner and a couple of hours on.
It's good. It's very enjoyable. It'll make you feel good about yourself for being on the side of justice. But it's a little like eating an entire loaf of white Mother's Pride toast with marmalade; it goes down perfectly but sometime after the event you'll realize there was no substance to it and you require something more, well, real. This year it earns four stars from me but I expect, if you ask me to watch it again in five years, I'll settle on three.
