And the blame lies with the writer/director James L Brooks - look no further. He has a good track record for movie making, but either he has lost his touch or he has nothing more to say. The script is all over the place, and dire with about three decent jokes which were in the trailer! Writer/directors with films that have been (over) praised (eg tarentino) never get the criticism they fully deserve when they make a turkey, so I won't go on, but Mr Brooks back to the drawing board and find a plot that works (not several strands that mean little and take too long to get going) dialogue that is not trying to come up with millenia-lasting significant aphorisms every third line, and characters that work on screen. Owen Wilson as a thick, self absorbed jock is spot on, but Paul Rudd a businessman (we hardly hear about his work, yet it drives the plot. please he never really gets the chance to convince or interest the audience. While Jack does Jack with no lines, while Reese Witherspoon, looking far more mature it has to be said, flogs herself unsparingly with a character that cannot be followed or fully believed in - it is a mess with far too much going on. And the last shot of her from Jack's balcony which shows unmercifully her black root hairs on the top of her head would have got Mr Brooks blacklisted when the big studios groomed their stars to look fabulous! Not funny, and neither was this film.
