I've seen a lot of IFC films and if there's one thing consistent among every release it's that they specialize in the unique, and this film is no exception.
What is sadly not surprising is the audience reviews here that seem to completely miss the point of a movie like this. A problem I see on the outset is that the film is billed as a horror but is more of a slow burn dark thriller, similar to that of The Gift or The Invitation or Come To Daddy, such that I generally know where it's headed but the journey contains enough unforeseen events to make the trip worthwhile.
User criticisms of the third act aren't valid, in my opinion. People seem to think that if a story isn't spoonfed to them then it makes no sense or is sub par, but the opposite is usually true. In this film, the tension of the characters comes to a head and chaos ensues when what's supposed to be a fun getaway for an average group of friends turns creepy and violent after multiple betrayals of trust occur. The scary part is the ending because it touches on the unnerving reality that there are some very sick people out there in the world that take advantage of the trust we hand over to strangers, a naivete that most of us don't grow out of until later on in life, sometimes never. The very last shot during the credits is the scariest, it reminded me of the ending to Creep.
The only aspect I feel is lacking is the score. I feel the composers needed to work on bringing a bit more excitement to some scenes that clearly called for it, but instead i felt the soundtrack was too slow. I don't feel the composers were trying to capture the mood of the characters at all and instead were going for scary at all times.
I give it a B+ a relatively short but unique thriller that's worth the watch.
