Thank you thank you, beautifully articulated scholarship; your students are very fortunate.
It's really bad. Tons of random stars are in it with a terrible script, cheesy lines, bad accents, nonsensical events, the fakest looking CGI I've ever seen, no character development. Seriously, skip this. It's not even worth a redbox rental.
One highlight, the Japanese commanders were well cast and acted.
Find Tora Tora Tora on Netflix instead.
Glorious, shocked, unexpected, heroic told with sublime voice. Standard impartial american narration. To All Those Who Fought in the Battle of Midway. We Salute You... I lost two great uncles (brothers) in the pacific theater, shot in the water when their ship went down. Midway Atoll, an great legendary sites for the Pacific Amazing Wars. Very nice movie. 11:00 That Ship Bomb looks a lot like a torpedo. Wow! I have seen many documentaries of Midway, this is by far the best. To the point. The reason that the American army does so well in wartime is, is that war is chaos, and the American army practices chaos on a daily basis -German Officer.
Finally some history on the History Channel. Today is the beginning of Battle of Midway. 3:33 if u only want to see the highlight moment. This is an excellent complement to the other new Midway film. It focuses on the danger of being a carrier plane flight crew, including the chance of being lost at sea. (In the also-excellent Japanese animation of the Oct42 carrier Battle of Santa Cruz, a Wildcat fighter pilot has to bail out, and you see him parachuting into the vast Pacific with the implication of little or no chance of ever being found so far from base (Espiritu Santo. I thought the CGI was very good, and note the Pensacola class heavy cruiser and the USS Atlanta antiaircraft cruiser rendered so faithfully. All the time spent with the men in the water was excruciating but fair, considering what a lot of aircrew went through. Back in Macomb Illinois, I had a friend named Ben T. Scheik who had been a PBY pilot at Midway and later and somehow survived the war. He was a heck of a pilot, and I could see Ben wearing a Hawaiian shirt flying his plane. Everyone should watch Hollywood director John Ford's color Battle of Midway documentary film also here on YouTube, wherein he focuses on the importance of search and rescue after the battle. To people at that time both in and out of the service, our servicemen's safety and wellbeing was uppermost in their minds. And the scene in this movie of the submarine surfacing raises the question of whether missing aircrew were picked up by the many Japanese subs north of Midway. and what might have happened to those aircrew. I'm not sure Miles Browning should be hammered so hard, though. If he hadn't gotten those planes off early and if we hadn't knocked out 3 of the 4 Japanese carriers, the battle would have gone the other way. Look how effective Hiryu's counterattack (on Yorktown) was, and it was just one of the Japanese carriers. I would like to see verification of his objection to lighting up Enterprise and Hornet for night-time landings and his disregard of aircrew safety after the first crucial day. GOOD film, and I'll be posting this on IMDb and H-Film.
This guy has the greatest narration voice, right. Everyone has a plan until a guy punches you in the face. Mike Tyson. 0:23 NANI. I watched the movie. I was on the edge of my seat... respect to the troops that gave their lives and put their lives on the line... ✊🇺🇸. Commander McClusky. They got bombs stacked all over the deck. Holy Hell we hit the Jackpot. Powder river. Quotes from excited USS Enterprise Air Group VF-6 pilots on attacking the Japanese carriers. Commander Wade McClusky's group were getting dangerously low on fuel, but his intuition told him they had to be very very close to the Japanese Task Force, he made a decision to fly for 15 additional minutes beyond their scheduled low fuel turn around point, and was rewarded by spotting a Japanese Destroyer going somewhere in a big hurry, they proceeded on that heading and found themselves over the main body of the Japanese, his air group, along with a trailing squadron from the Yorktown, in less than ten minutes, changed to course of WW2. Cmdr McClusky was awarded the Navy Cross for his intuitions.
Good movie but hard to understand the course of events.
Recommend watching Midway (1976) to see the big picture of events first to understand what's happening.
4:31 when you're in a dogfight in Warthunder but your left click won't work.
First, I'll agree that the filmmakers got a lot of details right: The timing of the U.S. attacks when the Japanese were caught in the rearming process. The poor performance of the Devastator TBD. Faulty torpedoes. The politics of the Japanese military. The fast turn-around getting Yorktown out to sea again. And lots more.
But the errors, embellishments and omissions were glaring: The Marshal Islands attack was ridiculously inflated. The Kamikaze hit on Enterprise during that battle (complete with Nick Jonas saving the day) never took place. The complete absence of American fighter planes on the American carriers. American attackers going in and facing anti aircraft fire without having first been jumped by Zeroes, and the missing dogfights via F4F fighter escorts. SBDs blowing Zeros out of the sky. Taking the time to depict John Ford as a brave movie maker on Midway, yet not showing Marine Fighter Squadron 221, flying antiquated equipment, going out to meet the incoming Japanese attackers against overwhelming odds and pretty much getting slaughtered. Yorktown's involvement in the battle reduced to one scene where she is burning, depicted from afar. The Nautilus getting depth-charged U-571 style. The ships in both fleets in such tight formations, it's more like a photo op than a battle formation.
So many worthwhile details that could have been made right in the same screening length, if they would have simply ditched the goofy Doolittle sequence. I love Aaron Eckhart, great actor, but his scenes in China had no place in a movie called "Midway, if the price was cutting out major elements of the Midway battle.
Maybe I'm being picky, but when they go out of their way to glorify John Ford, while leaving out a squadron of Marine fighter pilots that sacrificed themselves so valiantly, it just strikes me as typical Hollywood b.s.
I thought we were done with big battle CGI fests. It's just another mindless movie.
