Ad Astra is a slow but compelling sci-fi drama, with few moments of "action" and despite its relatively modest budget some spectacular visuals.
It focuses on the strained relationship between a son living in his fathers shadow and that absent father being the potential cause of a threat to humanity.
James Gray does a great job of creating a potential future which is all too believable, with attention to some really mundane details, such as how commercial flights to the moon would look and operate. (Subtle product placement for Virgin Galactic was a nice touch.
The films use of colour is brilliant, reflecting somewhat the mood of Brad Pitt's main character Major Roy McBride.
Brad Pitt puts out what I personally think is his strongest performance in a decade. Whilst his voiceover is relatively flat, which could be deliberate given his characters military demeanour, his work during the close-ups is excellent.
The film starts strong, but does go a little flat in the second half. Had it been maybe 20mins shorter it would have packed more punch.
Perhaps however those extra mins were there to build on the tension until father and son meet. When they do, it is a great examination of how "the sons pay for the sins of their fathers" in this case both psychologically and professionally. However they both get what they arguably deserve, which brings both joy and sadness in equal measure.
The film feels like a blend of so many other sci-fi films: 2001: Space Odyssey, Moon, Gravity, and even partly Event Horizon. Whilst it is inspired by them no doubt, it doesn't try and replicate them. This film is very much its own creation, and if you are happy with the slower pace then it is well worth the time.

Anyways, I just wanted to express how not only the sound track was beautiful but the movie itself. Some may say its not up to par with other big science fictions like Interstellar or Space Odessey but I think it did wonderful. A movie doesn't need all action and intense moments for it to be unique. And that's what Ad Astra does, its elegant like a stream, it doesn't depict any wild journey across our galaxy or others out there but in our very own solar system. Showing us that even with the many advancements made on that earth, we're only beginning to understand our own solar system, let alone galaxy or universe. At this point, idek where I'm going with this lol but I'll close on one thing the movie noted. It seems as doe there's no life and to me that seems terrifying, knowing that you're the only intelligent life in the known universe. It hard to imagine such, a big empty void, with one species to explore. It's understandable why his dad didn't want to come back. Putting in the work and sacrifices into something that your truly believe in, just for it to be a false hope. Well that's all I have. Haven't done one of these im a while. I enjoyed this movie! It had mixed reviews mostly from the audience and it was not a movie for everyone. But I was grabbed by this film's vulnerability and emotions. Brad loves to bring personal emotions/experiences (like from his loneliness post divorce and alcohol soberness) and that's what made his character in the film so relatable, vulnerable and raw. The soundtrack was spot on especially in the beginning and when Roy lunged his way back to his ship past all the scattered debris after he let his father pass into dark space. I have this movie in 4K and watch it a lot in my dark room with some LED lights on. Such an atmosphere and mood. And i listen to this soundtrack when I'm studying or relaxing. Glad i'm not the only one who was grabbed by this film. We all can learn a lot from it, especially men.

Hope The King's Man is as good as the first and refrains from indulging in the slack morals of the second.
