この地域は、低湿地帯の中に「亀」の甲羅の形を「成す」土地だからということで、かつて亀無・亀梨（かめなし）と呼ばれていました。正保元年(1644年)、江戸幕府が国図を作成するさいに、この地名は「無し」に通じて縁起が悪いとされ、「亀有」に改めたといわれています。

This area was called "Kamenashi" because the land forms (= "nashi") the shape of the shell of a turtle (= "kame"). In 1644, when the Edo shogunate created the national map, Japanese "nashi" was the same pronunciation as none and it was inauspicious, therefore it changed "ari" means exist, this area name is "Kameari"
