Even though i didn't had huge expectations towards "Frozen II. i felt a bit disappointed by the movie and that's saying something, since i'm one of those people, who actually liked and enjoyed the first movie a lot. Everyone, especially myself wasn't expecting the first "Frozen" movie to be so successful in the first place and it wasn't a huge surprise that with the huge popularity it got, they would eventually announce a sequel. So on December 7th (i know - i'm bit late with the review) i had the chance of seeing "Frozen II" in the cinema and now i'm going to write down what i liked and what i didn't liked about the movie.

The story in "Frozen II" is the aspect that i have huge issues with. The story goes as follows: Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven embark on a journey in order to discover the origins of Elsa's powers and saving their kingdom, after a mysterious voice calls out to Elsa. It may sound simple with some interesting ideas here and there, but the execution is very weak. Most of the time it didn't felt very important, but that doesn't mean that a sequel isn't necessary or needed, since with a sequel you can expand the world from the first movie in a meaningful way, develop the characters and show us how they grow more.

The first act, which is the set-up is engaging, effective and i do love how the characters spend their time together. I really liked how Olaf recaps the story of the first movie to the new characters and the whole sequence in Ahtohallan that involves around Elsa, where she discovers the mystery, which also included a moment where Elsa comes across her own memories and the memory of herself singing "Let it Go" and the way she cringed over that was cool and. that's about it. The writers were trying to continue the story from the first movie in a new compelling way, but it feels more like a story that didn't need to be told and it was hard to appreciate it. They also did some harm to the old characters like Kristoff and Olaf and also to the new characters.

The characters is the other aspect that i have a huge problems with, but i'll first mention the two main characters. Let's start with Elsa - the character that some do like her, but others don't. I fall on both sides, but even if you don't like her - you have understand why Elsa was the way that she was in the first movie. Let's recap: she had a trauma in a young age, because she was scared of hurting someone with her powers, including her sister Anna and she was raised very poorly by her family by keeping them separated and not telling anyone about her powers and as a result her fears and depression were growing more and more. Anna is trying to connect with her, but she is still rejected by Elsa.

Because of that trauma, she doesn't think very rationally, when she is dealing with anxiety from a young age (which is not very clear throughout the first movie) and for that she is rejecting the person, who is the only family that she has in her life. There were some great ideas and things that could have been explored, but the execution is so poorly handled and Elsa doesn't grow at all as a character, so i wouldn't blame anyone if they think that she is a selfish jerk throughout the first "Frozen" movie. They could have done way better with the character and she deserved a better treatment, but this is what we got.

I'm now happy to say that Elsa has more focus in the story, she is way better written and they expand more the relationship between Elsa and Anna, which is great, very well handled and it definitely is the strongest part of the movie. It's very clear by watching the movie that Elsa has grown more here than the previous one and is more open to her sister.

Anna is still the same likable character that we know her from the first movie and for me she is still one of the best and fleshed out Disney Princesses out there.

Sadly i can't say the same thing about the new and the other old characters. I want also to mention that i wouldn't include characters, who are long gone (or should i say dead) since the movie does have some moments that focus on them, but they are very brief, so i hope you understand me.

The problem is that the writers completely wasted all of the new characters. They have so little screen time and they weren't given enough time to be explored or developed more, which is sad, because their designs are great and if they had found a way to fit them naturally into the story, then it would have worked way better.

Like i mentioned: i didn't like what they did with Kristoff, who is trying to propose to Anna in the whole movie (which is already a cliché) and Olaf has become a bit annoying this time for some reason, but there are still moments that he shines, but they are not so many and i liked him more in the first movie and his comedy worked way better, than the second movie.

The dialogue is very mixed for me. In one half it does have some really strong lines of dialogue, while the other half is not strong all that much. The interaction between Elsa and Anna is great, but everything else is not good. A lot of the jokes were not very funny, especially the scene, where Kristoff is getting help by the new character Ryder to come up with an elaborate proposal. I didn't find the scene and the dialogue all that funny, even though everyone in the movie theater were laughing, especially the "Samantha" line by Olaf, which i heard it was improvised by the actor Josh Gad.

The acting is the aspect that i can't say for now if it's great or not great, since i only saw it in dubbed version, because where I live they don't offer the movie in it's original English language and if i have to watch it in English - i have to see it outside my country or just wait for Disney to release it on digital. In my country almost all of the animated movies are professionally dubbed and all of them are great. Most of the time i do prefer it that way to watch animated movies, because when i listen to the acting of the English cast - it's not very good (it's not always the case, but it happens sometimes) but i don't think it's the actors fault and i mostly blame the direction for that reason.

The cinematography is fantastic. It's visually gorgeous, stunning and every shot composition feels perfect and i can't imagine being shot in a different way.

Do i need to explain why the sound is fantastic? It's so obvious that the sound crew did a incredible job and all of the sound design is great.

The animation is gorgeous and i'll even say that it's a improvement over the original. The background environments look visually appealing and breathtaking at the same time, the water animation and clothing is just beautiful and realistic. The character designs still look fantastic and they are very distinct from each other with small details that are amazing to look at.

The music was the aspect that felt very OK in my opinion, but that doesn't mean that all of it was like that. Out of all eleven songs i liked six of them, while the other five were forgettable or not good to begin with. Since i did mention that i watched the movie with professional dubbing - all of the songs that were playing in the movie were translated and performed amazingly and for that i had a huge enjoyed listening to all of them, including the weakest song in the movie, which was Kristoff's "Lost in the Woods" song. Those that were playing in the end credits were not dubbed and after hearing them - i didn't like them or they were very average.

The main score, which is composed by Christophe Beck was. definitely the weakest part of the music. There are over nineteen tracks and i liked only six of them, so. yikes. The tracks that were great are "Introduction. The Northuldra. Iduna's Scarf. Reindeer Circle. Reunion" and "Epilogue. Everything else is either bland or not memorable like the ones that i liked.

After watching the movie - i did had the chance of listening to the soundtrack and hearing the songs in their original English language. They all sound great, except for Olaf's song "When I Am Older. I didn't enjoy all that much Josh Gad's singing.

In conclusion: Frozen II" does have things that can be considered an improvement over the original, but it also includes things that were not improved and aspects that the original did way better overall. It's a beautiful and yet very flawed movie that could have been a lot more. I hope for the next movie they go in a different direction, do things that can be considered a huge rick and improve the things that didn't work (for a example a better story) and if they do that, then the next third movie will probably be very good or even great. If you love animated movies (like me) then i do recommend it and i'm giving "Frozen II" a 7.3/10.
