Mostly, this is a film about bringing up nostalgia in all of us. It's pretty true for most of us, I think, that our most memorable friendships were forged in late elementary school into middle school. They weren't probably our friends for our whole lives, but we remember them because we shared the most awkward point in our lives together. Ace's gang of fellow teenagers is a great example of this, though it isn't shown outright. The group of older troublemakers are not really friends, only sharing a common inability to face up to their own problems as their own individuals. This is contrasted with Gordy's friends who, while they make fun of each other as much as any group of companions, are not too proud to sympathize with each other's problems and help each other.
The story is shown through the eyes of Gordy LaChance, who is easily the least likable but also the most relatable of the four main characters. He has his own conflicts and is a character worthy of sympathy, but he's also pretty generic. Then again, that's sort of his purpose. I'm sure that most people felt that they were more like Gordy than any of the other four. You kind of feel for Vern too since we've all been the butt of jokes like he is, though probably not as many as him. Chris generates sympathy as well because you want him to succeed, but know that he likely won't. I've felt for several of my own friends in the same way I felt for Chris. However, I think Chris sees Gordy's success as enough for him; if he can't have it, then Gordy had better have it, kind of like Chucky and Will in Good Will Hunting. Teddy is easily the most fun to watch, at least for me, and it's not surprising to find out that he died pretty young. He doesn't seem to be afraid of anything, which I guess is why I don't know too many people like Teddy. In his retrospective look at his friends, Gordy acknowledges what they do for him much more than what he does for them.
The plot is more of a series of events than an actual story. You know that the main goal throughout is to find the dead body and that the characters will eventually get there, but it's not the main thing on your mind while watching it. The audience is meant to be more concerned with what the next obstacle or trial the boys have to face will be. The same goes for the fun moments of the movie like the Mighty Mouse vs. Superman conversation and Gordy's pie-eating contest story.
The execution was great without being over-the-top noticeable. The dialogue was realistic, but still got it's points across. The acting was also great from the four kids in the sense that they felt like kids. It pretty much does what Goonies tried to do, but Goonies was made as a kids movie and so made the kids talk like people wish they did, whereas Stand by Me scripts them more closely to how they actually behave.
I would recommend this movie to pretty much anyone. It's not the peak of entertainment by any means, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth watching. In terms of appropriate age range, I can safely say that anyone above 13 can handle it. MPAA may say it's for 17+ but your seventh grader will not learn any vocabulary from this that they don't hear every day. If you absolutely need a solid plot to enjoy a story, I would say that should be the only thing holding you back from digitally renting this. Overall Rating: 8.4/10.

Ooooooh, how beautiful. I saw it when I was very young, but I watched it again about an hour ago and I'm still feeling a little sad. God, I don't think there will ever be another movie of that kind that lives up to its standards. The incredible acting and intense bonding really shine and the thing that really got me was River Phoenix. His character of Chris is one of the deepest, most touching characters I've ever seen.
God bless River, and let him rest in peace.
