Movie Info Still tormented by the past's uncomfortable memories, decades after surviving the harsh winter at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining (1980), it's only natural that a now-sad Dan Torrance has grown up into an alcoholic and a drifter. However, after managing for years to suppress his rare gift, Dan decides to put "The Shining" to good use as the local hospice's benevolent "Doctor Sleep"; and before he knows it, he makes contact with Abra Stone: a young girl with far more superior shining abilities. But, their strong telepathic bond attracts the attention of the semi-eternal psychic vampire, Rose the Hat, and her marauding gang of followers known as "The True Knot", who prey on the innocent, and feed off the effervescent essence of pain. I should preface this (very long) rant/post by saying “The Shining” is maybe my all-time favorite novel. I first read that book in my uncle’s remote fancy-ass cabin, during a snow storm no less, while I was curled up under some heavy covers. Stephen King made hedge animals terrifying. That’s impossible. So when Doctor Sleep the novel was released after all those years, I bought it on the first day and tore through it in a weekend. And frankly, I was very underwhelmed. Reading Doctor Sleep, I kept thinking that the book could have been set in any other Stephen King universe, and it would have been about the same. Maybe better. I thought the True Knot was goofy instead of scary. They were a comic-booky villain that would have been more at home in the Dark Tower series. I thought the post-facto inclusion of steam was ridiculous. To me, the sequel book was just a mediocre mix of bleh. So that’s a long way of saying that I didn’t think Doctor Sleep the movie would be any good. Matter of fact, I avoided this movie when it came out in the theaters. I saw that the box office returns were mediocre-to-bad, and I figured that said it all. It seemed like Doctor Sleep was a dud. Then they added Doctor Sleep on HBO Max the other day and I figured, what the hell, I’ll give it a go. Total 180, man. I really think Doctor Sleep is one of the best horror movies that have been made in the past several years. Mike Flanagan basically had an impossible task. He had to adapt a novel which was a sequel to another novel which had been adapted into an iconic movie which was hated by the author of the novels. I can’t envy that task. Yet this movie flawlessly incorporates all the difficult threads left by those (three! ) source materials. This is a thinking man’s horror movie. There aren’t any jump scares. The most frightening scenes are of the psychological sort, as when Danny confronts his ghostly father over some rejected whiskey. The only nudity to speak of is when Danny is laying naked with that lousy parent (Danny knows something about those), and this leads him to realize he’s hit his rock bottom. Rock bottom was one of the reasons why King hated Kubrick’s adaptation. The Shining novel was about a good man’s slow descent into darkness, whereas in the Kubrick movie Jack is pretty much already there at the start. Jack Nicholson never made much effort in the movie to portray conflict in Jack Torrance. He already seemed like an edgy guy who was teed up to chase his family around with an axe. Most of my gushing comes from the script. Whoever wrote this must have had the same reaction I did to the book, because the True Knot in the film are closer to the Manson Family. That’s scary enough, without the supernatural element tossed in. And Rebecca Ferguson. Wow. She was amazing as an charismatic (oc)cult leader. I didn’t have that reaction to the character in the book, and it’s entirely because of her performance. The actress playing Wendy does such an incredible job. She perfectly mimics both Shelley Duvall’s mannerisms and her distinctive high-pitched voice. When she ran out to see Danny at the beach at the beginning of the movie, I honestly thought they had CGI’d Shelley Duvall somehow. Plus the supporting cast was awesome. Zahn McClarnon was so great in Fargo. Jocelyn Donahue doesn’t do bad horror movies. They really lucked out with Kyliegh Curran. The only flaw is that the strongest, most edge-of-your-seat moments come at the end, where Danny walks around the abandoned hotel and reawakens the ghosts within. Those scenes were the best, and it makes the first 75% of the movie look a little bleaker in comparison. I am going to watch Haunting of Hill House now. I hope someday Flanagan is able to do Haunting of Overlook Hotel. Imagine how awesome that would be. TLDR: Doctor Sleep was so much better than it had any right to be. Bravo Mike Flanagan, you made an incredible movie.

I really enjoyed it as well, listened to the audiobook first then a couple of years later read The Shining and then Dr Sleep while we were camping at the British Grand Prix. King's style has certainly changed over the years, but his character development is just as good, if not better than it was in his early books. This is why I keep reading and rereading his books, I feel like I know the people he writes about, and I like seeing where they ended up when he writes a sequel. Saying that, not all books need a sequel, but I think Dr Sleep was well done.
