A really good war movie is the recent Roland Emmerich movie "Midway" with a straightforward factual story and thrilling action and heroes that look like heroes. It's a travesty that 1917 won the Golden Globe and Midway didn't even get a nomination.
There are so many holes in the story. Letting just 2 of them go is insane. The way Blake died was beyond irritating. Schofield's journey through sniper fire and river were just too unrealistic. Running through the battlefield at the end was just too much. Plus the elder Blake did not look like the younger Blake. Because things didn't ring true they weren't really exciting. Of course it is tense in the way you don't want him to die or get shot. But you know he will make or there is no movie so it wasn't the right kind of excitement.
How not to make a war movie. Please don't give this one an Oscar.

The camera work from 14 times Academy Award nominee cinematographer Rodger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) is outstanding and yet reminds of Private Ryan it surpasses it without the gory details but still puts you on the edge of your seat. It is a movie that you can connect with either if you have been in the army or not because it is a movie for all. It is a message, it is a wake-up call for the atrocities of war, and this is a war that happens now, in front of your eyes. The camera is so strong that it has some kind of documental feel that evokes some frames of Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" from 2018 where he puts never-before-seen footage to commemorate the centennial of the end of the war.
Someone has said that that the war movies should not be glorified with a soundtrack but what a soundtrack this movie has! My ow my. I just want to mention one name here: Thomas Newman.
Another interesting fact. In this movie, you cannot feel the special effects. It is for the first time that I am not feeling tricked by any CGI or computer gimmicks. Whatever they used here they used it wisely without breaking the balance between cinema and documentary and the final result is mesmerizing. It a disorientating, captivating, was filmed and edited as if it was one long take and the camera never leaves our main protagonists, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) out of its sight. The plot is rather simple: you follow two young soldiers ordered to deliver a message which will save 1,600 other soldiers.
It is a second war movie from Sam Mendes after Jarhead and it deserves special recognition from the movie industry. It is a movie to be talked about in the future because of its authenticity and the special message that it contains.

This movie is hands down one of the best war movies I have ever seen.
The cinematography is so extremely well made, and the acting of the protagonists are spot on. Deserves an Oscar. Very memorable piece of art. Well, the name is not wrong. There are 2 major key aspects which people don't bring up often (and which clearly are overlooked by the comments below) In October, the bolsheviks were quite a young faction and not that well established Their numbers rose over time (will get back to this later). If you look at the elections, most parties were revolutionaire parties. Mostly socialist parties. (Including the one with the most votes). Bolsheviks came in second. (Since none obtained 50%+ it wouldn't be a categorical defeat) So socialism was desired, but people couldn't tell what they wanted exactly. Now, about how things went. Bolsheviks followed the ideals of Marxist-Leninism. Those call for a world revolution and a world without borders or individualised nations as their endgoals. This is usually portrayed as left-leaning socialism. On the other side of socialist spectrum, you have the statists. They were socialists in the ideea that they favored control of the means of production by the state, but were also nationalistic and with no views of a World Revolution. In XIX and XXth century, when nation borders started to solidify as feudal systems went away, the ideea of nationalism was gaining ground: one land, one people. Soo, of course, why would someone vote to support other nations when the Great Russian Nation needs your help for itself. Now, this election taught the bolsheviks something. Previously, they considered the working class only engineers and factory workers amd pandered only to them sicne they seemed more educated. This is why it was the Bolsheviks who won the major cities. After this, the general tendency of the higher ups changed and a new internal faction gained ground (Apart from Stalin, I cannot remember the other leaders since they were ousted to make room for the image of Stalin later on). They proposed that farmers were also part of the working class and their interests should be taken into account. Now, since the masses were also part of the program, their numbers increased drastically. Not that it would have a major consequence on the political scene (as that was conquered by force since they controlled the cities), but it allowed them to gather an army to repel foreign agression and the 'whites'.
