Stand by me. Stand By Me is a movie based on a novella titled, The Body, the movies theme of friendship and trust is why it is such an adored movie across the nation. Its witty comebacks hit you with rib-tickling laughs and tales of tragic back stories that leave an emotional downcast and sunken feeling on your heart are what makes this a true 80's classic. Stand By Me has many fans, but also has many critics, as some viewers find the movie too childish and feel that the director didn't do a quality job including everything used in the book. Despite what some think, the director, Rob Reiner, has a history of enjoyable TV shows and movies, all of which gain a priceless laugh from you as well as jerking a few tears and ripping your heart into shreds. It's Rob's style of directing as he pulls you through an emotional roller-coaster that you never want to get off of. Directing movies like The Princess Bride (1987) A Few Good Men (1992) and Flipped (2010) show his passion for movies and acting.
The movie goes that Vern, Gordie, Chris, and Teddy learn of an accident in which a kid named Ray Brower had been hit by a train. The body hadn't been moved since the incident, but the boy had been confirmed to be dead. The group of boys decide that if they bring Ray's body back to town, they will be heros. However, Chris's older brother and his gang want to get to it first so they can get the credit. The race to get to the body includes challenges for the boys, whether that's crazy junkyard owners and their dogs trained to bite, leech puddles, or a train chasing them down. No matter the situation, the boys persevered and through tough times reach the body in an invigorating climactic ending.
The cast of the light hearted film include a group of 12-14 year olds who may be adolescent but know how to portray their characters well. Jerry O'Connell's character, Vern, is the origin of the comedy in this movie and his character could almost be compared to Chunk from The Goonies. His reactions and idiotic comments are what make him the joker of the group. River Phoenix's character, Chris, is more mature than Vern, but not by much. He is also very misunderstood. Because his father is known as the town's "drunk, he is blamed for many things Chris didn't do. For example, Chris was accused of stealing the milk money, which he did, but he tried to give it back. After trying to give back the money, the teachers say it's still missing, but the teacher he gave the money to shows up the next day with a nice new outfit. Even after this evidence is shown, Chris is still accused. Chris talks about how his dad gets violent when he is intoxicated, and that could have had an effect on Chris and the way he acts towards violence, because he is very serious about it at the end of the movie when a situation arises. Gordie, played by Wil Wheaton, is much more quiet and mature than the rest of his friends. Gordie never expects affection from his parents or anyone. After his star athlete brother Denny died in a car accident, his parents never payed any attention to Gordie. Unless it was to say that they didn't like his friends and that they wished everything about Gordie was more like Denny. When Gordie was getting ready to leave with his friends to find that body, he realized he needed a hat. He went into Denny's room and as his father saw him all he said was, Why can't you be more like Denny?
Teddy, played by Corey Feldman, is an eccentric odd young man. However, his past isn't any better than anyone else's. Teddy's right ear is deformed due to his father putting it to a burning stove when he was younger. No matter how crazy Teddy's father is, Corey still sticks by him. He threatened to kill the junkyard owner when the man laughed at the fact Teddy's father "stormed the beaches of Normandy" as Teddy says. Teddy is the least mature of the group, but has the best sense of humor.
Stand By Me's theme song, written by Ben E. King, is a true ode to relationships and has won many awards in itself. The fact that the song is in the Grammy Hall of Fame is a sign that the whole production of the movie truly was breathtaking and astonishing. The use of dialogue portrayed the lifestyle of a tween in the 60's.
Looking back on my thoughts I loved this movie and every aspect of it. Not only did it teach me some values of friendship that I didn't know, it introduced me to a whole new genre of movies I never even thought to look at. This movie will stay at number 1 on my favorite movies list for quite a long time. It left a very healthy impression on me and I highly recommend you take the time to watch this beautiful production.
