Notice that the title "The old guard" is in singular although a quick glance at the poster will tell you that there is a team of warriors. The title therefore must refer to the leader ( boss" as they call her) with emphasis on the middle word. During the course of the movie, she is asked the question "how old are you" at least five times, by various other characters. Her name is a clue. "Andy" as everybody calls her, is for Andromache the Scythain, The Eternal Warrior.
Arguably, to disclose that this movie is about immortal warriors is not a spoiler. Still, I have included the warning to be safe. While the idea is hardly novel, the movie does a good job in getting the details gradually unfolded. The opening montage has Andy (Charlize Theron) and the three guys working for her lie on the floor of a parking lot, in pools of blood, apparently quite dead. Next we see a scene that we soon realize is from somewhat earlier, when Andy, apparently coming back from some kind of sabbatical, meets one of these guys and hands him as a souvenir the first edition of Don Quixote.
In a reunion of the four, Andy laments that "The world is not getting any better; it's getting worse. Still, they carry on with what they have been doing, accepting a job which turns out to be a setup. This brings us back to the opening montage. These four "dead" warriors get back on their feet and proceed to eliminate the dozen or so gunmen who "killed" them, showcasing movement swift and deadly, employing an assortment of guns, swords and an axe (again in singular as Andy is the only one qualified to wield it. Meanwhile, however, their "resurrection" is capture in video tape, by people who are obviously interested in their special "skills" of automatic-self-healing.
Meanwhile, in a parallel story line, we see Nile (Kiki Layne) almost a "baby" in appearance, but in fact a lethal U.S. Marine when in action. She is killed, and then miraculously recovers. Then comes a series of montages of Nile and Andy (also her team members) dreaming about one another. Andy finds Nile, kidnaps her, and shoots her when she tries to escape. Looking down at her dead body, Andy complains "So goddam slow the first couple of times. Slow or not, Nile does come back to life.
As I said, further details gradually unfold, throughout the rest of the movie. When the five are finally together, Nile asks the innocent and obvious question "Are you the good guys or the bad guys. Depends on the century" one of the guys quipped. Despite their, I don't know, two, three thousand years of age discrepancy, Andy is more like a badass big sister to Nile. We also find out more about relationships between these people, in one case with poetic elegance. And there are more, a lot more, details.
I haven't even mentioned the bad guys. In a nutshell, they want to profit from our heroes' immortality, starting with research of their genetic makeup. Well, they are not all bad. There is one turns good. As well, the five immortals are not the only ones. There is at least another one, MIA.
Hopefully, without disclosing more details I have conveyed the idea that there is enough in plotline to keep things busy throughout the movie. Action sequences are very watchable. Character development receives a bit more attention compared with an average movie in this genre.
What Theron is capable of needs no elaboration. Layne holds her own. There is also a large, good support cast. While this movie has most of the usual stuff for this genre, there are some new stuff. Recapping my "headline" this movie, while not spectacular, offers enough to support a sequel or a TV series spin-off.
